Let’s talk about Whisky! Oh wait, is it spelled Whiskey?

Whisky originated in Scotland. It comes from the term uisce beatha, which means “water of life” in Gaelic, then it was shortened to uisce and then whiskey with no E. From there whisky traveled to Ireland, and in order to distinguish their product on the market, the Irish added an E making the spelling whiskey. E was just added as a marketing differentiator! So if the country making the whiskey has its origin in Irish whiskey, then they’ll add an E. American whiskey has an E, if it’s Scottish or Japanese there is no E. Whiskey is a generic categorial term like the vehicle. Hummer is a vehicle, and so is a Prius. Whiskey just means grain alcohol, aged.

So when you say grain alcohol, is there a particular type of grain?

Any type of grain but traditionally almost all whiskey is made from four grains: corn, barley, rye or wheat.

What is malt whiskey made from?

It almost always means it’s made from all barley.

What makes a whisky labeled a Scotch?

It has to be made in Scotland, simple. Scotch has to be at least three years old and use oak. Here at Gulp we sell Glenlivet Founders 700ml for 1,950 Baht. First revealed towards the end of 2014, the Founder's Reserve is now available in the UK and will be replacing The Glenlivet 12 in many of the mature markets despite initial indications that it would sit beside it, broadening the entry-level options. Named in tribute to distillery founder George Smith, it's packaged in Georgian blue. Another scotch we sell that probably everyone has heard of is Chivas Regal 12 700ml, our price at Gulp in Thailand is 1,950 Baht. Johnnie Walker Gold Label price in Thailand is 2,400 Baht and we will offer free delivery for orders over 3,000 Baht. You can add some Fentiman’s premium mixers to your cart to be eligible for the free delivery!

Ok now when we see Single (Malt), what does it mean?

Single means one distillery grained whiskey. Malt and grain refer to the recipe of grains used to make the whiskey. If it says malt in Scotland, it’s all barley. If it says grain, it’s a mixture of grains which is closer to an Irish or American whiskey. Although a product like Black Label 700ml is very popular and available at 7/11, at Gulp we sell more unique products such as Kavalan Distillery Select Single Malt Whisky 700ml for 2,300 Baht and can deliver is straight to your doorstep. Kavalan exemplifies the sheer quality of whisky currently coming out of Taiwan. The skills of Master Blender Ian Chang work with the humid Taiwanese climate to create whisky that is diverse and complex. Fresh and clean, the spirit is rich with silky smoothness and hints of tropical fruits, mango in particular.
