Just when we thought things were getting better, it all came crashing down again.

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the pandemic situation in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand appeared to be improving. The number of COVID-19 cases were decreasing, while immunization rates were steadily increasing. Just in time for the holidays, life was almost back to normal.

Then Omicron appeared! In many countries, the COVID-19 strain triggered a new wave of infections that took no prisoners. The government rapidly implemented entry limits from numerous African nations when the first few Omicron cases were discovered overseas, in order to avert a breakout in Thailand in early December.

But it was all in vain. Omicron had gained a foothold in the Land of Smiles by the middle of December. The virus is said to have spread from overseas tourists to locals, many of whom were traveling around the country during the holidays. In the new year, Bangkok and other major Thai cities reported new highs in the number of illnesses.

Despite the ongoing Omicron outbreak, authorities have not enforced strong preventive measures, such as lockdowns or curfews, other than requiring the use of face masks. People are still out and about, partaking in social activities, and the 9pm ban on alcohol in restaurants should be lifted today!

In Bangkok and neighboring 'Blue Zone' regions, here's what you can and can't do:

Under the consideration of the authorities in each area, entertainment places such as nightclubs, bars, and karaoke lounges can resume normal operations. If a positive case is traced from there, the venue must close immediately.

Until 11pm, alcoholic beverages can be served in pubs and restaurants (with a restaurant license) (as of today, 24th Jan).

Some Bangkok establishments, including some bars on Soi Nana in Chinatown and Khao San Road, but even some in the city centre, are now requiring customers to provide proof of immunization or take an ATK test before entering.

So what should you do?

The authorities are still recommending people to limit going out, even to work if possible, to try and combat the rising infection rates.
